International Women's day: Brent symposium - March 2006
Theme: Forced Marriage, Religious Divorce and ‘Honour Killing’
The International Sufi School Khidmatul Khadim participated in a symposium organized by Brent Council on International Women’s Day on 08 March 2006.
The International Sufi School presented its perspectives on the issues of forced marriage, religious divorce and ‘honour killing’ which have affected women for a long time and continue to do so. The problems seem to be on the rise in the borough of Brent.
The key message of the International Sufi School was that the reform of society must necessarily go through the reform of the status of women.
The root causes of the problems were analysed, starting from the economic factors that gave rise to these problems together with the evolution of social factors with the passage of time.
The International Sufi School, the School of Peace and Service proposes a global and holistic approach which looks at these contemporary problems from a peacemaker viewpoint, which aims to liberate both the oppressed and the oppressor . The International Sufi School advocates an alternative economic model by means of peace which allows the human being to regain his true human dignity. Such a model would help address the causative economic factors around forced marriage, religious divorce, and ‘honour’ killing at source.
